Jefferson Parish is currently under a tropical storm watch and necessary emergency precautions are underway.

All Parish offices will close at 2 PM tomorrow, Sept 4, in anticipation of the weather event. Courts have NOT been cancelled at the time of this notice.

Gordon is expected to be a heavy rain producer with accumulations of 4 to 6 inches over southern Alabama, southern and central Mississippi, and southeastern and northeastern Louisiana, with isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches through late Thursday.

Tornados are possible with hurricane conditions (CAT1)expected late Tuesday (2pm -8pm).

All Jefferson Parish Public School System schools and administration buildings will be closed Tuesday, September 4, 2018 due to Tropical Storm Gordon. JPPSS students and employees should not report to school or work on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

The safety of our students and employees is our top responsibility. While the weather early Tuesday morning would likely allow students and employees to arrive safely, the National Weather Service forecasts conditions to worsen throughout the day. Strengthening winds during the school day could cause electrical issues at our schools and buildings that would threaten the safety of our students and employees. The expected wind and rain from the tropical storm could also create unsafe conditions for students and employees as they travel home, as wind gusts could be in excess of 50 mph during our typical dismissal times. This is especially a concern for students and employees on our school buses.

JPPSS will continue to monitor the weather with local authorities. For the latest announcements, visit jpschools.org, our mobile app, or the district’s Facebook or Twitter (@jppss) channels.
