
President Michael S. Yenni has announced all parish buildings will close at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in order to prepare for the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Gordon. This includes all Parish libraries and all Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation activities. Head Start Programs, Archdiocese, and the Jefferson Parish School system WILL BE CLOSED all day Tuesday.

Jefferson Transit will make decision on bus schedules Tuesday morning.
The Jefferson Parish Emergency Management Department will activate at the Emergency Operations Center located in Gretna, LA beginning at 4:00 PM. Essential personnel are to report at their scheduled time.
Garbage Pickup will continue as normally scheduled in unincorporated Jefferson Parish until further notification. Updates will be listed on social media, jeffparish.net and the local media in regards to Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Gordon is expected to be a minimal Category 1 hurricane at landfall. The Hurricane Watch for our area has been upgraded to a Hurricane Warning for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This system could produce widespread 3-7 inches of rain through Thursday morning.
Impacts are expected to begin Tuesday afternoon and continue through at least Wednesday morning. Onset of tropical storm force winds could begin as early as 2pm tomorrow afternoon at the coast, progressing inland through the afternoon. However, the most likely time of onset is during the evening hours tomorrow at the coast, progressing inland through the late evening and overnight.

The Jefferson Parish Drainage Department is fully staffed with 287 employees who operate and maintain 69 pump stations and 184 pumps in the system. The Jefferson Parish Sewerage Department is fully staffed with 200 employees who operate and maintain 505 sewer lift stations and wet wells, as well as 18,000 manholes. The Parish also has 6 wastewater treatment plants.
There are 80,000 catch basins in unincorporated Jefferson. Citizens are asked to help reduce the chance of street flooding by clearing debris from their streets and drains around their property when it is safe to do so; such debris impedes water flow into the drainage system.
Remember Parish Ordinance Section 36-188 prohibits motorists from traveling on flooded streets, which may increase the possibility of structural flooding due to wake action caused by moving vehicles.
