
Police and Family are asking for help locating a 21-year-old man who was last seen in New Orleans about 11 months ago and Laplace 8 months ago.
According to New Orleans police Michael James McCormack’s mother told NOPD her son was supposed to take a bus from New Orleans to Naples, Florida on June 29, 2018 but never arrived. McCormack’s mother told NOPD she’s made “several attempts” to contact her son, but was unable to reach him.
According to his family his aunt and sister both last heard from McCormack in September 2018, McCormack’s aunt paid for a hotel room at the Millet Hotel for McCormack in Laplace, LA from September 6th – 9th, 2018 McCormack’s sister last spoke with him on September 9th, 2018. According to hotel staff after check out on September 9th, 2018 McCormack hung around the hotel a few days and was last seen walking down railroad tracks near the hotel in the Laplace area.
He has not been heard from since.
According to New Orleans Police Department and Orleans Parish Criminal Court records, McCormack was arrested and charged with simple burglary and simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling on November 7th, 2017. According to court records on January 1st, 2018 McCormack’s court appointed lawyer, Laura Bixby, requested that upon plea agreement McCormack be released to his grandmother, and McCormack will be placed into a mental health treatment facility in Naples, Florida. Laura Bixby then raised mental competency and requested McCormack to be evaluated, a mental competency hearing was then set for February 6th, 2018.
On February 6th, 2018 according to court records Dr. Rafael Salcedo and Dr. Richard Richoux stated McCormack to be incompetent to move forward with trial and the court ruled McCormack incompetent to proceed.
On June 12th, 2018, Dr. Jose Artecona, appeared for a competency hearing and testified that he treated Michael McCormack and that McCormack is competent however the court requested that McCormack was to be evaluated by Dr. Deland.
On June 21st, 2018 according to court records Dr. Deland and Dr. Sims stated to the court that McCormack was competent to move forward with trial and the court ruled McCormack competent to proceed.
On June 28th, 2018 according to court records McCormack agreed to a plea agreement with the state and was then sentenced to 7 months to be served in Orleans Parish Prison with credit for time served. On June 29th, 2018 Michael McCormack was to be released from Orleans Parish Prison to the care of his court appointed Lawyer, Laura Bixby, and was to be brought to the bus station to be sent back to Panama City, Florida.
It is unknown if McCormack actually made it to the bus station and what happened between the time of his release on June 29th, 2018 and his stay in Laplace, LA on September 6th, 2018.
Michael James McCormack is 21 years old (DOB: 02/12/1998), 5′9″ and weighs between 145-160 pounds, his eyes are blue, and his hair is Dirty Blonde/Reddish. He also has 3 homemade tattoos on his lower arm and a possible black outline of a lightning bolt on his lower arm.
He also goes by several names including Michael/Mike McCormack, Casper, and Kandence.
Michael McCormack was last seen in Laplace, LA in September 2018 but is believed to be back in the New Orleans area.
