Today, Jefferson Parish public works crews continued to prepare the parish for 4 to 6 inches of rain by cleaning an additional 3,850 catch basins bringing the total number of basins cleaned this year to 31,850. The potential for heavy rain fall still exists and residents should continue to be weather aware.
Grand Isle, Lafitte, Crown Point, Barataria and the Town of Jean Lafitte remain under mandatory evacuation as now Hurricane Barry makes landfall west of Jefferson Parish. Grand Isle’s curfew remains in place from dusk to dawn.
Earlier today, Entergy reported approximately 10,000 Jefferson Parish customers without power but have worked with Jefferson Parish Streets and Parkways Departments to restore power to a large number of customers leaving around 5,000 without power; a majority of which are in Grand Isle which remains inaccessible due to LA Highway 1 being impassable. “While most of the East Bank and West Bank have been spared from this event, we are still very concerned about Grand Isle, lower lying Lafitte, Crown Point, Barataria and the town of Jean Lafitte. We have worked to assist them in any way we can with sandbags and pumps, and we are confident that Mayor Carmardelle and Mayor Kerner have tackled this situation head on,” said President Michael Yenni. “I want to thank Governor John Bel Edwards for his support and assistance, Commissioner Eric Skremetta and Entergy for their diligence in restoring power to our area, the Jefferson Parish Council, Sheriff Lopinto, the East Bank Consolidated Fire Department and all thirteen West Bank volunteer fire departments for being prepared and equipped to handle the worst case scenario.”
Hurricane Barry is anticipated to weaken and turn into a tropical depression by tomorrow allowing Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center to reduce to a partial activation beginning at 7pm tonight and plans to dissemble Sunday morning at 7am.
